Award Winning Farm

Meet Justin Blandford!

Mushrooms have been a part of my cooking for a long time. The textures and bold umami flavors they have to offer have long inspired culinary adventures for me. A good friend who is a deep well of knowledge invited me to go foraging; I had no prior experience gathering or identifying wild mushrooms, but with his expertise and guidance we walked through the woods and I came home with two and a half pounds of chanterelles. It was truly thrilling and decadent. A few years later, that same friend began growing mushrooms at home, and after another few years I eventually convinced him to hire me. We worked together growing gourmet mushrooms for four years. He felt a calling to change paths, and I felt called to continue, so I started Award Winning Farm.

When did you first get started?

Award Winning Farm was started in 2025 after its founder gained four years of experience with Flying Saucer Farms.

What inspired you to start your business?

I had a strong desire to continue in the tradition of Flying Saucer, and to apply the knowledge and techniques I had learned.

What is your favorite thing to make/produce?

King Blue Oysters are probably my favorite mushrooms to grow--they are very expressive and reactive.

Where are you from/where did you grow up?

I was born, and have lived almost my whole life in Houston. I have a family connection to Galveston, and spent a lot of time on the Gulf Coast growing up.
